What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry comprises a wide variety of products and procedures designed to improve the appearance of teeth. It's different from normal dentistry in that it concerns itself with the look, rather than the health, of teeth. Film, television and magazines laden with airbrushed images of celebrities confirm that a straight, white smile is essential to public image. Some people are born with this trait. Those of us who weren't born with it can buy it.

Someone's smile is among the first things we notice about them. The smile defines the face. This fact is a source of anxiety for many people. Some even cover their mouths when laughing - a real shame, since smiling is the expression of happiness, and the pursuit of happiness is our unalienable right.

But now, no matter their budget, people in need of cosmetic dentistry can find affordable, effective treatment. The recent surge of new products spans a wide spectrum of cost and method, from inexpensive tooth-whitening toothpastes to in-office bleaching to laser whitening to celebrity-class veneers.

You can find just the right cosmetic dentist or cosmetic dental product in Washington DC.

There are many ways to whiten your smile these days, and at a variety of costs. Laser whitening is certainly the fastest, and the price can range anywhere from $200-$2000. Be sure to check with your dentist to be certain that laser treatment is right for you. Many in-office treatments start in the dentist's chair and are brought home for the remainder of the whitening process. The mouthpieces may be worn for three hours to overnight. This is a gradual whitening process and ranges in price from $100-$300. Other whitening products are available at the drug store for under $50, including gels, strips, teeth-whitening toothpastes and flosses.

Laser

An effective in-office cosmetic dentistry technique is laser whitening, a procedure that combines the potency of a translucent gel medium with the high-powered light emitted by a laser beam. To begin the process, the cosmetic dentist will meticulously clean the patients teeth and then place a rubber dam or wax on the gums (depending on the dentist's preference) to protect the patient from bleaching agents. Once a peroxide-based gel is applied to the patient's teeth, a blue-beamed argon laser is focused on each lubricated tooth for approximately 20 seconds. After darkly stained areas absorb the blue argon light, a red laser is used by the dentist. This second heat-producing infrared beam further whitens and more deeply penetrates the teeth. The three-fold whitening process typically lasts two to three hours, after which, a protective coating is brushed onto the teeth rendered porous by the intense bleaching technique.

Because of this concentrated intensity, laser light bleaching offers faster results than does regular gel bleaching to eliminate stains caused by cigarette smoke, medication, caffeine or genetics. Crystals in the gel medium are activated by the emitted light from the laser and consequently are readily absorbed into the teeth enamel. Although costs for laser techniques vary, the price is usually over 1000.

If you need a professional teeth-whitening process that is more gradual and more affordable, In-office whitening treatment may be for you. The dentist makes a plastic tray after a mold of your mouth, which you take home and wear for one to two hours a day with a special bleaching gel. Because this method is gradual, it will appear more natural to those around you than laser treatment. In-office whitening can cost from $100 - $300. Some popular methods currently used by cosmetic dentists are the Zoom, BriteSmile and Opalescence bleaching systems.

Over the Counter

For at-home teeth whitening, there are many different over- the-counter products available in...

For at-home teeth whitening, there are many different over- the-counter products available in California. Cosmetic dental strips placed on the teeth for whitening purposes are usually worn twice daily for 30 minute intervals. The strength of the strip depends on the degree of peroxide. Naturally, the strips with a higher concentration of peroxide are intended to be worn for fewer days than those with lower concentrations. These OTC teeth whitening kits are equipped with strips designed to fit the top and bottom rows of teeth. Zoom whitening gel is an at-home product that requires custom fitted trays made by your dentist.

Whitening strips were introduced as an alternative to tray whitening techniques. Often called Night Guard Vital Bleaching, this at-home procedure consists of placing a bleaching solution (a peroxide mixture) into a previously custom-fitted tray or "night guard". The bleaching solutions may vary in potency and may be worn from one hour to an entire night, depending on the severity of stains. In some cases, patients have experienced uncomfortable short-term side effects when having teeth bleached as hydrogen peroxide can increase temperature sensitivity in the teeth, particularly at higher concentrations.

For optimal whitening, experts agree that peroxide administered by a dentist or at-home is most effective in bleaching stains caused by age, tobacco, coffee, and tea. Based on clinical studies, 96 % of patients with these kinds of stains experience some lightening effect. It is important to note, however, that overuse of over-the-counter home bleaching products may wear away tooth enamel, particularly solutions that contain acid.

You can use surface whitening toothpastes, which are used the same as ordinary toothpaste. They contain abrasives to scrub stains off the surface of the teeth caused by coffee, tea, red wine, nicotine and soda. They are available over-the-counter at your local convenience store.

Veneers are fashioned out of porcelain (commonly misspelled as porcelin) and designed to thinly cover damaged, discolored or chipped teeth. The laminates also remedy punctured or unusually spaced teeth and are a frequent substitute for crowns. Based on the patient's imprint taken at the dentist, porcelain facings are designed by a laboratory technician. The cosmetic dentist then bonds the custom-fitted veneers to the front of the offending tooth with special dental adhesive. Porcelain veneer application usually calls for several cosmetic dental appointments. Lumineers, for instance, require two dental visits to apply. Before the application process, parts of the teeth must be buffed down and delicately shaped so as to accommodate the new porcelain laminate. Once the veneer application is complete, the procedure is finalized with a hardening light that targets and seals the adhesive.

Aesthetic dental work with this level of skill and precision is recommended to achieve a more natural look than other cosmetic tooth enhancements. Consequently, the cost of veneers application ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 dollars per tooth. Since materials like coffee, wine and cigarette smoke may slightly discolor new veneers, take as much heed to staining as with natural teeth. Da vinci veneers are slender shells of ceramic matter that are fixed to the front surface of teeth. Similarly, Mac veneers are created with pressed ceramic compounds to attain a natural appearance.

It is common these days to consider orthodontics a subcategory of cosmetic dentistry. For that reason, it is worth mentioning here, though it is actually its own category. Especially since orthodontic treatments have a cosmetic or aesthetic result: a pleasing smile!

Braces have changed a great deal over the years. Perhaps you remember the cumbersome head gear of the old days. Metal and see-through plastic braces are still common. But these days, on the cutting edge of orthodontics there are some braces that are nearly invisible! An orthodontist may choose to implement the Invisalign system, which entails a custom mouthpiece. It is clear and difficult to see. Like regular braces, Invisalign tackles orthodontic problems like crowded or gapped teeth, under-bite, over-bite and cross-bite. And if you like, you can take out your mouthpiece for a special occasion or a sticky snack.

The cosmetic dentistry market has seen a massive influx of new products and treatments in recent years. These marvels of dental aesthetics satisfy a wide range of needs and budgets, from over-the-counter kits in drug stores to state-of-the-art laser treatments. Most likely, cost will determine the method a person chooses. Here is a list of ball park figures to help you gauge your smile enhancement prospects.

Teeth-Whitening
Laser - $600 - $1,200
In-Office - $100 - $300
Over-the-Counter - $10 - $30
Alternatives - $7 - $30

Veneers
Traditional Porcelain - $900 - $2,500 per tooth
Dental Composite - about $250 per tooth
Lumineers - $700 - $1,000 per tooth

Cosmetic dental procedures will not be covered by most dental insurance plans, but you'd do well to check with your company about services covered and the amount they could reimburse for treatment. If he or she sees fit, your cosmetic dentist may submit a "Pretreatment Plan" for the insurance company to review. Following review, the insurer will inform you of the plan's reimbursement offer.

Colorado dental insurance, dental plans and prescription coverage programs are available to individual and family alike by many insurance programs in the state of Colorado, and through national insurance companies as well.

Cultural Teeth Alteration

As we know, Western ideals of beauty stress the importance of a straight, white smile. No tooth should be missing or out of its proper place. No wonder so many of us are amazed when we encounter, whether in person or in media, a culture that places the emphasis elsewhere.

We deeply value our pearly whites. But what about the French-colonial Annamese of whom each member of the society was expected to blacken their teeth on aesthetic and moral grounds?

We seek to retain all of our teeth and replace them when they're lost. Many contemporary societies in Africa and Australia hold an ideal of beauty that calls for the removal of teeth. This extraction process is called 'ablation' and is executed with a pointed stick which is knocked from behind with a stone.

There are societies in Africa, Australia and Papua New Guinea in which it is customary to file the teeth to sharp points, in some cases as a symbol of maturity. Similar dental modification is also performed by some people in the Western world who wish to express their deep identification with lizards, cats, vampires, and any number of animals and/or monsters.
